New Downtown Art Installation

Love Letters from Nanaimo reimagines the idea of a gateway as a message rather than a marker. Instead of simply announcing arrival, the design responds to presence. Drawing from the visual language of handwritten letters, envelopes, and postage stamps, the utility box becomes a piece of civic correspondence, a note from the land itself. The phrase “Glad You Are Here” shifts the tone to a warm sentiment, implying that the visitor is not just arriving, but already belongs. It suggests relationship, gratitude, and care.

The postal motif connects naturally to the idea of gateways and movement. Letters travel. They cross distances, carry stories, and arrive with intention. By using stamps and layered typography as physical, tactile forms, the design echoes the act of passing through, arriving, pausing, and continuing on. Nature imagery woven into the letterforms reinforces the sense that this message comes from the place itself: the surrounding forests, shoreline, and wildlife are not just scenery, but active participants in welcoming those who pass through this area.

Ultimately, Love Letters from Nanaimo positions the city as generous and self-aware, a place that acknowledges the impact of visitors and residents alike. As a gateway artwork, the piece invites people to slow down, notice where they are, and feel personally addressed by the environment around them.

This piece is located at the corner of Third and Howard. I hope you enjoy it.
